On Sunday, December 31, from 12:00 noon, the overpasses in the Civic Centre will open to traffic, announced Mayor Florin Birta in a press conference held today at the site. The largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in Oradea has reached its final stage, with the remaining works to be carried out next spring being the landscaping, green spaces and other landscape elements, as well as the completion of road markings.
“These passages that we will open tomorrow are like a gift that the people of Oradea, through their patience, have lent to the builders and the municipality, and now, on New Year’s Eve, we have managed to give these passages and this area back to the people of Oradea so that they can fully enjoy them as they deserve. What do these passages mean? It means that getting from one end of the city to the other will be much quicker, it will be much shorter, there will be no more pollution in this area – think of when there were queues of cars standing at the turbo-gas station, at the pedestrian crossing at the Traffic Police, plus the time spent in traffic will be reduced, time that is so important for each of us”, said Florin Birta at the press conference.
EU-funded works completed on time
The Mayor of Oradea explained the reasons why traffic in the underpasses will be possible from tomorrow and what these major investments in road infrastructure mean for traffic in the city and for the citizens of Oradea.
“These works are due for completion in August 2024. Thanks to the care of the contractors who have mobilized exemplary and all my colleagues in the Oradea City Hall, we have the opportunity to open the traffic through these passages tomorrow at 12:00. There were two reasons that forced us to do this. First of all to reduce traffic jams in the city, because the situation here has certainly created other traffic jams in other areas. Secondly, everything we have completed by the end of this year is paid for by European funds as an eligible part. And then, even if there are still works to be done, they will be carried out next spring, being spent from the ineligible part of these projects, which, anyway, was the contribution of the municipality of Oradea”, said the mayor of Oradea.
The network of road crossings is part of the infrastructure investment objective “Sustainable urban mobility corridor in Emanuil Gojdu Square in Oradea – Phase I and Phase II”, a project financed by the Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020, with non-reimbursable funding of 98% of the eligible expenditure.
