The newest underground car park in Oradea, built around the Orthodox Cathedral in the Civic Centre and the only park and ride in the city, was opened today.

“Parking is open to anyone who will be passing through the area and would like to park in the area. It will follow the regime of the other car parks in the city, when they were opened: three months the parking will be free, and after that it will be paid, like the other car parks in the municipality. It is the seventh off-road parking lot built in Oradea since 2014. With its completion, the number of parking spaces in under- and above-ground car parks in Oradea has exceeded 2200 spaces”, said Mayor Florin Birta at the press conference held to mark the opening of the car park.

The underground car park has 225 spaces for cars and 31 spaces for motorcycles. A further 6 spaces are for charging electric cars and 9 spaces for disabled vehicles, the latter being located near access areas, pay machines and lifts.

The car park is served by three passenger lifts, located to the east near the bridge connecting to the Citadel, to the west near the entrance to the Cathedral, and to the north towards the CEC bank headquarters.

Access to the car park is from two directions, located at the two ends of the building, easily accessible from the Fortress Ditch and has a ticket office operating in the pedestrian entrance/exit area.

Citizens will be able to use the car park free of charge, as with the other car parks built by the municipality, for three months (until the end of March 2024).

The works were carried out by SC Construcții Erbassu SA, in association with SC Simbac SA, with a final deadline of early June 2024. Their value amounts to 33,704,700 lei (plus VAT).

Underground parking with all necessary facilities

Free parking spaces are electronically marked with a green display and those occupied with a red display. The car park can be used by small, medium and large class cars up to 5 m in length, with petrol, diesel, electric and hybrid engines, with a strict ban on LPG-powered cars.

The car park is equipped with an access control system (barriers, number plate readers), automatic payment machines and an on-site cleaning and vacuuming station.

Landscaping and enhanced archaeological remains

The area above the car park has been paved with urban stone paving and equipped with street furniture and landscaping. There are small, medium and large trees, herbs, grasses and perennials in the garden boxes, as well as a shaded area created by pergolas.

It should be recalled that archaeological remains were uncovered during the excavations, so in order to mark them, the ruins of the two stages of the Church of the Holy Spirit and part of the ravelin’s counterscarp have been preserved, restored and left in view, and the wall of the ravelin, the important medieval buildings and the counterscarp are marked in the basement floor of the car park.

Completion of the enhancement of these remains and the installation of the multilingual information panels will take place by 5 June 2024 (final deadline).

The contractor will also carry out further work on the application of two-component epoxy resin, which will be carried out under favourable weather conditions (no humidity and temperatures above 10°C), and the electric car charging stations will be installed at the end of the free parking period.

With the opening of this new objective, Oradea has almost 2,200 parking spaces built in underground and above-ground car parks.
